Fokker Dr.1 – kit from LEGO® bricks

Description

No, this had nothing to do with a doctor – the Fokker Dr.1 takes its name from the German word Dreidecker or triplane. In fact, the aeroplane possesses three wings lying on top of each other. The struts on the outer wing were initially not intended and served to prevent vibrations.

With 110 hp, the modest 420 copies of the triplane manufactured in 1917-1918 were quite slow. The thick blade profile, in combination with a slender weight, lent it an agility unsurpassed at that time.

The version chosen by Peter Blackert appears in the colours of the famous pilot, the Red Baron. Baron Manfred von Richthofen chalked up 19 of 80 aerial victories in a Fokker Dr.1 as a fighter pilot in the First World War and met his death in such a plane in 1918.
