Description
The Albatros D.V was the final development of the Albatros D family and was used at the end of the First World War. Some design flaws had been rectified; others persisted. Finally, the D.Va had a slightly more powerful engine to compensate for the higher weight of the newer type.
Almost 2,500 warplanes of this type were built by the Albatros Aircraft Factory in Johannisthal (part of Berlin-Köpenick since 1920) for the Imperial German Air Force. The machines were flown by famous fighter pilots like the ‘Red Baron’, Manfred von Richthofen, and Ernst Udet.
Two specimens of the Albatros D.Va have survived and are in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington and the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
