Description
Spacious, manageable and economical – appearance doesn’t matter. That’s what the requirements of the Citroën director were for a new vehicle in 1934. The designer subsequently succeeded in delivering on them, also in terms of appearance.
When the Citroën 2CV was finally introduced in 1948, the initial plans had been revised and improved. Nevertheless, the trade press was not impressed. A Dutch journalist even dared to compare it to an ugly duck. But the triumph of the minimalist anti-status symbol was unstoppable.
Over five million “sardine tins”, as they were dubbed in English, rolled off the assembly line from 1949 to 1990 as a saloon or delivery vehicle. Even special models, which should keep up one’s interest in the vehicle type, were well received.
