Description
Developed in the late 1950s and operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) and NASA until the end of the 1990s, the SR-71 (with SR standing for ‘strategic reconnaissance’) still holds records as the aircraft with the highest altitude (at over 85,000 feet/nearly 26,000 metres) and speed (Mach 3.3) in the world. It was given the nickname ‘Blackbird’ because of its dark paint job. As the plane had to withstand extremely high temperatures, the body was mainly comprised of titanium and the windscreens in the double cockpit were made of quartz. Pilots also wore pressurised suits on board.
Only 32 Blackbirds were ever built, of which 12 were lost in accidents and none were shot down, making it a highly successful spy plane. Its primary intelligence gathering activities have now been replaced by satellites and drones.
