Description
The Japanese long-distance fighter plane was a success story even before its surprise attack on the US Pacific fleet in Pearl Harbour in 1941. To this day, the event, which was decisive for the outcome of the war, remains infamous. It was made into a film with Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale and Josh Hartnett in 2001.
The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was fast, high-powered, nimble and had an enormous range of 2,600 km. 11,000 units were built by 1945 after it had proved itself in the battle against China shortly after its maiden flight in 1939.
The lightness of the Japanese carrier fighter plane was simultaneously a great advantage and its greatest weakness: it broke apart easily and couldn’t carry heavy armaments. However, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero became a legend due to its kamikaze attacks. The other side of the coin are the thousands of young Japanese soldiers who lost their lives this way, especially in the last two years of the Second World War.
