Micro TGV PSE (Paris Sud-Est)

The TGV PSE (Paris Sud-Est) was the first TGV service to travel daily from Paris to Lyon in 1981 and SNCF’s first electric multiple unit. At the time, it was the fastest train in the world. It comprised two locomotives coupled to eight articulated passenger carriages with a motorised bogie in each of the carriages adjacent to the traction units. The train bore this distinctive orange, grey and white livery until 2001. Originally, the train was built to run at 270 km/h but was later upgraded to 300 km/h. More powerful brakes were also installed. As well as such technical improvements, the train underwent a series of renovations to its interior; for example, to make the seats more comfortable, install power sockets, and allow space for wheelchairs, bicycles, and luggage. Only four of the 111 trains originally built by Alstom and Francorail-MTE between 1978 and 1988 have been preserved, two of which are now kept at the Cité du Train. Number 61, baptised Fontainebleau after the commune in France, was a dual-voltage set built in 1982. All sets were retired from service in 2019 when they were replaced by the TGV POS (Paris-Ostfrankreich-Süddeutschland).
