The Yakovlev Yak-38 only carried out a few missions during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Indeed, the strike fighter saw limited service with the Soviet Navy overall due to its limited range, lack of onboard radar and temperamental engines. It was in fact dubbed the Soviets’ failed attempt at a Harrier.
