Common grackle – kit from LEGO® bricks

If you look at the common grackle closely, his plumage shimmers in colours ranging from bright blue to purple. His pale, yellow eyes are striking. It is not unthinkable to find him noisily seeking a sleeping place amongst friends in typical sparrow-like fashion.

Common grackles belong to the suborder of songbirds, which is somewhat misleading. Witnesses have reported almost painful sounds that are more reminiscent of an opening rusty gate. This is certainly one reason why no one in the North American homeland of the common grackle ever thought to keep one as a pet.

This beauty at second glance is extremely flexible in terms of nutrition. He likes nuts, berries, insects, worms and frogs, and doesn’t shy away from fishing either. In the winter, common grackles like to gather in large groups in grain fields. When really hungry, they don’t think twice about stealing food from other birds.
